During the spring and early summer, termite swarmers may swarm from the ground as part of their reproductive cycle. Sometimes these swarms can occur in or near homes. Ant swarmers behave in a similar manner. If you are trying to identify whether you have ant or termite swarmers, please refer to the chart at the bottom of the page. Swarmers in or near your house indicate a colony is in the area. Colonies are several feet below the ground's surface with tunnels leading to the surface. Since termites have been known to tunnel hundreds of feet from the colony to find food, there is a high probability that your home all ready has a termite infestation or will become infested. (If you have recently had a termite swarm in or near your home, please call us immediately at one of numbers listed below.)
Once termites have found your home or business, they will build mud tunnels up the foundation or joist supports to reach the wood in your home. Even though the exterior of your home or business may be brick, stone, or metal, most buildings have some wood included in the structure. Once inside, termites will tunnel throughout the building eating the wooden portions of the structure.
If you are in the process of building a home, call us to get pricing for pretreat services. However, if your home is infested with termites or you want to protect your older home from termites, you have two options to address any current infestation and prevent future infestations: chemical treatment or bait stations. While chemical treatments have been around for years, recent developments in chemicals have resulted in increased effectiveness. Chemical treatments involve treating the internal and external walls of your home as well as the perimeter. To protect your home with bait stations, stations are placed in the ground around your home. These stations are monitored periodically for termite activity. Many of these new chemicals for both types of treatments not only affect the termites that come into contact with the chemical but also other termites that the initial carriers come into contact with back in the colony.
Termites cause millions of dollars in damage to homes across the United States every year. One reason termites are able to cause so much damage is because these pests are often not detected until a substantial amount of damage has been done (i.e. when a swarm occurs). Extensive termite damage can weaken your home's structural integrity.
